The Time Of Day We Chose To Film And Why
For our trailer we filmed during the afternoon from the approximate hours of 12:45 to 3:30. However due to the time of year being between winter/spring, we were lucky enough to have the effect of dimness and sun.. This gave a good lighting making the clips appear to be filmed around the evening time which produced an effective paranormal style scene without the use of editing. When we were filming our trailer we tended to use dark locations or even locations throughout the day such as the graveyard. If we filmed in the day, when we edited the clips we had to put dark effects on it in order to create atmosphere and tension in the trailer for the audience. Due o this edit decision it gave a contrast of a light/dark effect, which almost implied a good/evil side to the trailer, creating a mysterious effect to the audience. As shown below the different edits and lighting which we have chosen for our trailer.
The Different Times Of Day And The Atmospheres They Create
MIDNIGHT
Midnight is is the middle of the night (00:00 hours) it is often the most haunted and feared time of the day due to the atmosphere it creates. Night time is often associated with danger and where people are most at risk. This makes it an ideal time to film horror due to the impact the time of day has on the audience. It creates a sense of fear within the audience as they feel like they are there.
MIDDAY
This is the middle of the day, also called "NOON" (12:00 hours). At this time of the day it is bright and the atmosphere feels safe. This is because of the safety of the light, this would contradict the typical feel of horror, therefore challenging conventions.
MORNING
This is the time from midnight to midday. This is often a very calm time of the day where not very much happens. This time of day could seem spooky due to the light/dark sky that changes quickly, this would also be an ideal time to film horror.
AFTERNOON
This is the time from midday (noon) to evening. From 12:00 hours to approximately 18:00 hours. This is also a ideal time to film due to the changing colours in sky, making it mysterious.
EVENING
This is the time from the end of the afternoon to midnight. From approximately 18:00 hours to 00:00 hours. The sky is getting darker at this time and it is a typical time to film horror due to the darkness of the scene.
DAWN
This is the time when the sun rises or comes up (sunrise) the skies are changing colour and its immediately looks spookey, again a prefect time to film horror.
DUSK
This is the time when the sun sets or goes down (sunset). Just like dawn the sky is changing colour, however this is darker due to its changing to nighttime, so it is more ideal to film in dusk than dawn.
